Keeping Fit While Avoiding the Summer Heat

FORT BENNING, Ga. – Since the beginning of July, Fort Benning Morale Welfare and Recreation has been offering a full schedule of new fitness classes at Smith Gym open to all Military ID cardholders.
Soldier readiness begins with personal fitness and healthy lifestyle choices. In support of this, the Maneuver Performance Triad promotes good habits in the areas of nutrition, sleep and activity.
From Body Pump and Kettleball to Spin and Zumba classes, those who attend can tailor the program to their individual needs, whether that be strength, aerobic or flexibility. PiYo, a combination of Pilates and Yoga, and an Ab Attack class are also offered.
The best part is these classes provide a safe option away from the summer sun when the risk of heat injuries is at its peak.
“We offer our classes inside, so they don’t have to go running outside or do any PT exercise outside, they can come in here,” Said Naela Wiley, Fitness Program Manager. “They can take a class. And get their PT in that way.”
Anyone with a Military ID is welcome to participate and the cost is only three dollars per class.
These classes are offered throughout the day from 6am to 7pm, including lunch hour, so as to maximize convenience for those wishing to participate.
A full schedule of classes are available at Smith Gym, from MWR or www.benningmwr.com.
