2017 Gainey Cup kicks-off May 1 on Fort Benning

FORT BENNING, Ga. – The 2017 William J. (Joe) Gainey Cup, a grueling competition that aims to identify the Army’s Best Scout Squad, gets underway May 1 with events scheduled at various locations across Fort Benning.
The four-day competition, hosted by the 316th Cavalry Brigade, pits 24 six-man Cavalry Scout teams competing in back-to-back events that test their physical conditioning, Cavalry skills and team strategies.
The annual competition, established in 2013, features Cavalry Scout Squads from across the Army to include units from the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; U.S. Army National Guard, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Shafter, Hawaii; 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, and a team from Canada among others.
The first event is scheduled to kickoff at 5:30 a.m. Monday, May 1 and the competition will conclude at approximately 11 a.m. May 4.
A formal awards ceremony will be held at Harmony Church, Building 4303, immediately following the final event.
The competition is open to the public and several events are spectator-friendly.
