FORT BENNING, Ga. – McBride Elementary School and Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion 47th Infantry Regiment partnered recently to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Read Across America Week.
Thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers across the country participate in Read Across America Week each year in commemoration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday celebrated March 2. The annual event brings together kids, teens, and books.
McBride Elementary carried on the annual tradition by organizing different activities each day during the week to promote reading.
The activities Feb. 27 at the school involved having Soldiers from 2-47 Infantry visit the school as guest readers for the students. The Soldiers read Dr. Seuss books as part of the program to promote excitement and create a greater interest for reading among the students.
The goal of the Read Across America Week is to inspire students to embrace Dr. Seuss’s truth that “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Through events like this, the students are encouraged to grow in their love for reading while deepening the relationship between Fort Benning and our local community.
The Soldiers are a part of an ongoing relationship between McBride Elementary and 2-47 Infantry in the Muscogee County Partners in Education program.
The Soldiers and students had a fun experience during Read Across America Week and look forward to more opportunities to grow the partnership in the future.
