Gold Star Family Members celebrate holiday season
Fort Benning Public Affairs /
COLUMBUS, Ga. — Gold Star Family Members celebrated the holiday season Dec. 4 during the Fort Benning/Maneuver Center of Excellence Gold Star Family Christmas Party at the RiverCenter for Performing Arts in downtown Columbus.
Santa and Mrs. Claus made a highly anticipated visit to the party and listened to every child’s wish for Christmas. Even some “older kids” got a chance to whisper a wish or two to Santa.
During the party, Gold Star Family Members created holiday crafts and decorations with the help of Fort Benning “Elves”, in the form of Officer Candidate School candidates, and they enjoyed a nice lunch of ham, green beans, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, rolls and assorted desserts.
Numerous prizes, gifts and arts and crafts were donated by local businesses and private donors for the event.
The Gold Star Family Members capped off the festive day by attending the annual Maneuver Center of Excellence Band Holiday Concert as honored guests at the RiverCenter.
Gold Star Families are recognized for the sacrifices their families have made when a relative died in service to our nation. The Army recognizes that no one has given more for the nation than the families of the fallen.
