Holiday Message from TRADOC – Safety Starts Here!

Happy Holidays 2016Gen. David G. Perkins, Commanding General, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command /

The winter holiday season is a period of high activity, as we use well-deserved time off to recharge our batteries, enjoy opportunities to celebrate with family and friends, and consider all the accomplishments of the past year.

Let me extend my heartfelt appreciation and holiday greetings to all Soldiers, Civilians, and Family members within the

command.

While we take time out for loved ones and friends this season, let us all anticipate the dangers associated with winter travel.  Unpredictable weather and increased vehicle volume present the possibility of injury-causing accidents.  Private motor vehicle accidents are still one of the leading causes of death in this country and the military.

I want leaders to use every tool at their disposal to prevent the needless loss of life associated with private motor vehicle and other accidents. Prevention plans should already be in place that include fire safety, toy safety, food safety, and recreational safety.

Ensure maximum participation by the chain of command, civilian directors, and first-line supervisors to brief their personnel to review off-duty activities and conduct risk assessments to mitigate hazards. Utilize the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center website at https://safety.army .mil for information on safe winter and holiday practices while off-duty.

I ask leaders at every level to provide alternative activities for Soldiers who do not have plans during holiday block leave, identify your at-risk population for reckless behavior and potential suicidal tendencies and intervene.

“Battle buddies” are effective countermeasures to avert poor decisions; empower and charge them with the responsibility to care for each other.

I wish everyone Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year!  Enjoy the holidays but please return safely. You are important and valued members of our team.

Safety Starts Here! Victory Starts Here!
