The Directorate of Emergency Services will be implementing changes to the main Fort Benning visitor center in the coming weeks.

The visitor center at the I-185 Access Control Point will undergo a facelift that will require the building to be closed. The renovations will result in a larger facility and additional parking.

A trailer will serve as the temporary visitor center located on the right hand side of the Access Control Point at the old truck inspection lane.

The temporary facility should be operational by Aug 14, and the newly renovated visitor center should reopen by March 2017.

“The I-185 Access Control Point is just too small,” said James Webster, the Physical Security Division chief at the Directorate of Emergency Services. “With all the requirements for the background checks and the vetting that we do now, it’s just not big enough, so it is going to be expanded.”

Motorists should expect some lane closures and traffic adjustments during the renovation period. “We had some diagonal lines painted for parking and we will have some barriers set up so people can get out of their cars, walk up to the trailer and not be in the flow of traffic,” said Webster.

Webster explained that the parking lot and everything on the left side of the current visitor center will be closed off during construction.

“The temporary visitor center will be a 24 hour, seven days a week facility,” said Webster.

A second visitor center will open Aug 28 at the Harmony Church, 8th Division Road Access Control Point. The second visitor center will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All contractor personnel that do not have a CAC, AIE Card or AIE pass will be required to use the Harmony Church visitor center to gain access to the post. Any contractor personnel without a CAC, AIE Card or AIE pass who go to the temporary visitor center on I-185 will be turned away.

“This will help take some of the pressure off of traffic,” said Webster.

“We just ask that people be patient about the construction going on and slow down as they are coming up to the Access Control Point, because there will be workers out there,” said Webster.
